Sad things happen

Ever since we came back from our summer holiday I didn’t feel like going online. Partly because we didn’t have any internet access during our vacation – which was very peaceful – and I didn’t want to disturb that silence too much. But the main reason for not wanting to return online was that a friend of mine was very, very ill, and I just didn’t care so much about what went on outside.

Friday afternoon the inevitable happened: he passed away.

He has been my best friend since the first day I met him at school; we share so many memories and have done so many great things together. I’m absolutely gutted, I will miss him so much.

I love this silly picture of us together. It is a recent one of us enjoying (more than) a few beers in the Heartland Brewery under the Empire State Building. What a fantastic holiday that was… it makes me smile.

Matthijs worked as an architect, but his real passion was photography and graphic design. He was only 37 years old… cancer is a bitch. Five years ago my mother and now my best friend…

I can’t even begin to imagine how his wife, his mother and his brother feel.

Cheers mate, you will be missed by many people!

Sorry to hear about your loss – I really feel for you. It’s always sad when someone is taken away, but when it’s someone so special in your life, and at such a young age, it can feel that a part of yourself has gone, too.

I hope that time and your family will help the pain become more manageable.

    Take care, Jakko.

    Thanks Steve, I appreciate it.
I’m positive all the great memories will outweigh the sadness at some point.

Judging by what you said about your friendship, I’m sure that’s bound to be the case.

I’m sure that will happen too. Hope it will be soon.
